Viseu International Guitar Competition
Rules and Regulation (Revised on November 2023)
Guitarists of all nationalities are eligible, provided they were born after March 9th, 1989.
Contestants who have family ties with a jury member or have studied with a jury member in the last two years will not be judged by that jury member.
1. Enrolment
Applications must be made through the official competition website no later than the March 1st, 2024: www.musicadaprimavera.pt; Contestants must also submit the following documents via email to competition@musicadaprimavera.pt
a) An identity document (which includes age);
b) One recent photograph;
c) Curriculum Vitae.
d) Video for the preselection video until March 1st.
2. Enrolment fee
The enrolment has an entry fee of 80€, or 70€ if paid by February 21st, 2024.
The fee must be received by the 7th of March, 2024 and must be paid in full via

2.1 Travel and accommodation will be at the contestant’s expense.
2.2 Non attendance
The enrollment fee is not refundable.
3. Competition format
The competition will have 4 elimination rounds.
– The preselection round will be held online, through the submission of a video. The remaining 3 qualifiers will be held in person, in Viseu, Portugal.
a) Preselection in online format on March 9th, 2024.
Once received, the videos will be posted by us on social media for viewing by the public and appreciation by the Jury.
b) 1st Qualifying Round in person on April 4th, 2024 from 9:30am.
b) 2nd Qualifying Round in person on April 5th, 2024 from 9:30am.
c) Final Round in person on April 6th, 2024 at 9:00pm.
4. Programme
4.1 Preselection Round
A 15 minute freely chosen programme including a study by Villa-Lobos.
4.2 First Qualifying Round
A freely chosen program of about 15 minutes with a repetition of the Villa-Lobos study.
4.2 Second Qualifying Round
A freely chosen program of about 20 minutes. It is not possible to repeat works played in earlier rounds.
4.3 Final
A 20 minute program that includes one or more works by the following composers: J. S. Bach, D. Scarlatti, L. Weiss, C. Seixas, J. K. Mertz, Francisco Tárrega; Agustín Barrios; Antonio Lauro; Joaquín Rodrigo, Roland Dyens; Carlo Domeniconi; Leo Brouwer; Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. It’s allowed to repeat up to 10 minutes of works played in previous qualifying rounds.
Note – A copy of any unpublished piece must be sent to the organising committee.
5. Video
a) The competitor must frame himself entirely while still remaining close to the camera. The video should be as clear as possible (well illuminated).
b) The video, one per round, must not be edited nor can it contain cuts between the pieces.
c) Must be recorded on purpose for this competition with 1920×1080 (FullHD) minimum resolution. The record must be done horizontally (traditional format).
5.1 Videos should be sent by Google Drive, Dropbox, My Air Bridge or another equivalent service to competition@musicadaprimavera.pt
6. Publication of results
The preselection round results will be published on the official website the day after the videos are published.
7. Jury
The jury has 8 members or more from different countries.
8. Participation in the final round is decided by a majority vote of the jury, with the chair of the jury having a casting vote. The jury’s decision is irrevocable.
9. Prizes
1st prize – 6.000 €
+ A concert guitar Kohno Sakurai RF with an estimated value of 8,000€
+ A concert at the International Guitar Festival of J. K. Mertz – Bratislava (2024)
+ A concert at the Viseu Spring Music Festival – Portugal (2025)
+ A concert at the Festival de la Guitarra de Sevilha – Spain
+ A concert at the Festival Internacional de Guitarra do Fundão – Portugal
2nd prize – 2.000 €
3rd prize – 1.000 €
Prize for the Best Portuguese Contestant – 500€
Audience Award – 500€
10. Contestants will waive all rights now and at any time in the future, in relation to any type of recording made during their performances in this Festival.
11. Participation in the competition implies that the contestant accepts the above regulations.
