Viseu International Guitar Competition

Regulations (updated January 2026)

Open Category

The Organizing Committee of the Viseu International Guitar Competition announces that the 7th edition of the competition will begin with an online pre-selection on March 27, 2026, followed by the in-person rounds held in Viseu from April 9 to April 11, 2026.
The competition is open to guitarists of all nationalities, born on or after March 27, 1990. Participants who have family ties with any member of the jury, or who have studied with a jury member within the two years preceding the competition, will not be evaluated by that jury member.

1. Registration
Registration must be completed by March 7, 2026, via the official competition website: www.musicadaprimavera.pt;
Applicants must also send the following documents to competition@musicadaprimavera.pt:

a) A copy of an identity document indicating the participant’s date of birth;
b) One recent photograph;
c) Curriculum Vitae;
d) Pre-selection video, to be submitted by March 21, 2026.

2. Registration Fee
The registration fee is 120€ and must be paid by March 11, 2026.
Applications submitted and paid before March 1, 2026, will benefit from a 20€ early-registration discount.

2.1 Travel and accommodation expenses are the sole responsibility of the participant.

3. Withdrawal
In the event of withdrawal, the registration fee will not be refunded.

4. Competition Structure
The competition consists of four rounds:
a) Online Pre-selection – The pre-selection video must be submitted by March 21, 2026. Results will be announced on March 27, 2026.
b) First Round – Live performance on April 9, 2026, starting at 9:30 a.m.
c) Second Round – Live performance on April 10, 2026, starting at 9:30 a.m.
d) Final Round – Live performance on April 11, 2026, at 9:00 p.m.

5. Repertoire
5.1 Pre-selection
A free program of up to 15 minutes (recorded), including one étude by Heitor Villa-Lobos.

5.2 First Round
A free program of up to 15 minutes, including the same Villa-Lobos étude performed in the pre-selection.

5.3 Second Round
A free program of up to 20 minutes. Repetition of works performed in the pre-selection or first round is not permitted.

5.4 Final Round
A program of up to 20 minutes including one or more works by the following composers: J. S. Bach, D. Scarlatti, S. L. Weiss, C. Seixas, J. K. Mertz, Francisco Tárrega, Agustín Barrios, Antonio Lauro, Joaquín Rodrigo, Roland Dyens, Carlo Domeniconi, Leo Brouwer, and Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. A maximum of 10 minutes of repertoire previously performed in earlier rounds may be repeated.

NB: If a participant chooses to perform an unpublished work, a copy of the score must be submitted to the Organizing Committee in advance.

6. Video Requirements
a) The performer must be visible from head to toe, with a clear and stable camera framing. The video must be well lit and of clear visual quality.
b) The recording must be unedited and contain no cuts between pieces.
c) The video must be recorded specifically for this competition, with a minimum resolution of 1920×1080 (Full HD), in horizontal format.

6.1 Videos must be submitted via Google Drive, Dropbox, SwissTransfer, or a similar service to: competition@musicadaprimavera.pt

7. Jury
The jury will consist of 8 or more members of various nationalities.

7.1. Admission to the final round will be decided by a majority vote of the jury. In the event of a tie, the President of the Jury shall have a casting vote. All jury decisions are final and irrevocable.

9. Recording Rights Participants waive any rights to audio or video recordings made during the competition, both during and after the event.

10. Acceptance of the Regulations Participation in the competition implies full acceptance of the present regulations.

Junior Category

The Organizing Committee of the Viseu International Guitar Competition announces that, as part of its 7th edition, the competition will include a Youth Category for guitarists up to 18 years of age, to be held from April 6 to April 7, 2026.
The competition is open to guitarists of all nationalities, born on or after April 6, 2007. Participants who have family ties with any member of the jury, or who have studied with a jury member within the two years preceding the competition, will not be evaluated by that jury member.

Registration must be completed by March 15, 2026, via the official competition website: www.musicadaprimavera.pt;
Applicants must also send the following documents to competition@musicadaprimavera.pt:

a) A copy of an identity document indicating the participant’s date of birth;
b) One recent photograph;
c) Curriculum Vitae.

2. Registration Fee
The registration fee is 100€ and must be paid by March 18, 2026.
Applications submitted and paid by March 10, 2026, will benefit from a 10€ discount.
Payment methods are the same as those indicated for the Professional Category.
