Viseu International Guitar Competition

Rules and Regulation (Revised on August 2020)

The organizing committee of the International Guitar Competition of Viseu informs that the 4th edition, due to the pandemic situation, will be held on a virtual/online format in the first 2 elimination rounds through the submission of videos. The final round will be held in person, with competitors (3 finalists) performing on stage. The competition will run from November 30th to December 19th, 2020. Guitarists of any nationality born after 19/12/1985 can participate.

Contestants who have family ties with a jury member or have studied with a jury member in the last two years will not be judged by that jury member.
The composition of the jury will be communicated to the contestants after they have correctly completed their application forms.

1. Enrolment
Applications must be made through the official competition website no later than the 10th of November 2020: www.musicadaprimavera.pt; Contestants must also submit the following documents via email to viseu.music.competition@gmail.com

a) An identity document (which includes age);
b) One recent photograph;
c) Curriculum Vitae.

2. Enrolment fee
The enrolment has an entry fee of 75€, or 65€ if paid by October 27th.
The fee must be received by the 13th of November and must be paid in full via

2.1 Travel and accommodation will be at the contestant’s expense.

2.2 Non attendance
The enrolment fee is not refundable.

3. Programme
3.1 First round:
A freely chosen program of about 15 minutes which must include a Villa-Lobo’s study.

3.2 Second round:
A freely chosen program of about 20 minutes including one piece or movement from the baroque period. It is not possible to repeat works played in the first round.

3.3 Final round:
A 25 minute program that includes one or more works by the following composers: Francisco Tárrega; Agustín Barrios; Antonio Lauro; Roland Dyens; Carlo Domeniconi; Leo Brouwer. It’s allowed to repeat up to 10 minutes of the program played in previous rounds.
Note – A copy of any unpublished piece must be sent to the committee by the 23th of November 2020.

4. Videos
a) The competitor must frame himself entirely and not be more than 4 meters away from the camera.
b) The video, one per round, must not be edited nor can it contain cuts between the pieces.
c) Must be recorded on purpose for this competition.

4.1 Videos should be sent by Wetransfer, Dropbox or Google Drive to competition@musicadaprimavera.pt

5. The beginning of the competition/ Submission of the videos
a) 1st Round: All competitors must submit 1 video corresponding to the 1st round by November 30th
b) 2nd Round: The selected competitors must submit another video corresponding to the 2nd round by December 4th.

5.1 Once received, the videos will be published on social networks on the dates indicated in point 5.

6. Final round – The finalists (3 competitors) will have to come to Viseu, and perform live on stage, on December 19th (Saturday) at 9:30 pm.

7. Contesters Selection – The jury will announce the results on social media the day after the videos are published.

8. Jury
The jury has 9 members or more from 6 different countries. Details here.

9. Entrance to the final round will be based on a simple majority of votes. In case of need, the presidency of the jury has a quality vote.
The jury’s decision will be final.

10. Prizes
1st prize – 8.000 €
+ A Kohno Sakurai Guitar Mastro-RF model valued at 8300 €
+ A concert at the International Guitar Festival of J. K. Mertz – Bratislava (2020)
+ A concert at the 14th Viseu Spring Music Festival (2021)
+ A concert at Ciclos de Recitais CMP/CMSM – Porto
+ A concert at Guitar Festival de la Guitarra de Sevilla – Spain

2nd prize – 3.000 €
3rd prize – 1.500 €
Audience Award – 500€
Prize for the Best Portuguese Contestant– 500€

12. Contestants will waive all rights now and at any time in the future, in relation to any type of recording made during their performances in this Festival.
